An issue I've run across is a lot of people have taken this notion to the extreme, where they are specifically training to beat an unarmed. I think that being able to beat an untrained is a early milestone for martial arts, similar to being able to bench your body weight is to bodybuilding.

If a belt means 'fundementals' and no belt means 'none' than in terms of relation, the fundamentals guy should be a badass to a no belt/white belt, cross training aside. Black belts in taekwondo or karate do not mean you are on the same level as a jiujitsu black belt.
